Robert Cialdini's Influence is the most cited book on why people say yes. He names seven principles. Most marketers use them to sell. A personal brand can use them for something better: to make true things easier to see and trust.
The seven levers, in a post
- Reciprocity. Give something useful first, with nothing attached. A template, a full how-to, a teardown. People remember who helped them.
- Commitment and consistency. People stick with small steps they've already taken. A poll vote or a one-word comment is a tiny commitment that makes the next step easier.
- Social proof. When unsure, people look at what others like them did. Client results and real testimonials do more than any claim about yourself.
- Liking. People say yes to people they like and feel similar to. Your face, your story and your struggles do this work.
- Authority. People defer to credible experts. Show expertise through depth and results rather than titles.
- Scarcity. Limited things feel more valuable. Only use real limits, like open slots or a closing date.
- Unity. People trust those who share their identity. This is the same idea as Seth Godin's "people like us".
How they map to the funnel
| Stage | Levers that fit |
|---|---|
| Get found | Reciprocity and liking, where people meet you for the first time |
| Build trust | Authority, commitment and unity, where trust is built |
| Win clients | Social proof and scarcity, right before an ask |
A week that pulls scarcity five times sounds like a sale. A week with only reciprocity never gets to the ask.
The ethical line
Cialdini's principles work because they're shortcuts people use to decide quickly. That makes them easy to abuse. Fake scarcity, invented numbers and borrowed authority work once and then cost you the trust that a personal brand runs on.
The rule Maria uses: a lever should make something true clearer, never make something false believable.
How Maria uses this
- A lever on every post. When you plan, log or save an idea, you can tag the lever it pulls. It's optional.
- A lever line under every week. Maria shows which levers your week leans on, and warns you when it's all asks, or when nothing is given away.
- Ideas come tagged. When Maria pulls ideas from your journal, she suggests a lever for each, and only suggests scarcity if your entry mentions a real limit.
